Description
100 x Camellia sasanqua Setsugekka
- Growth Habit: Camellia sasanqua ‘Setsugekka’ is an evergreen shrub that typically reaches a height of 2-3 meters and a similar spread if not pruned. It has an upright and slightly spreading growth habit, making it ideal for hedging purposes.
- Leaves: The leaves are dark green, glossy, and elliptical, measuring 3-5 cm in length. They provide a lush and dense foliage cover.
- Flowers: The plant produces large, semi-double white flowers with a central cluster of bright yellow stamens. The petals are slightly ruffled, giving the blooms a delicate appearance. Flowering occurs from late autumn to early winter (April to June in New Zealand), providing garden interest during the cooler months.
Cultural Requirements:
- Light: Prefers partial shade to full sun. In New Zealand, it thrives best in areas with dappled light or morning sun and afternoon shade to prevent leaf scorch.
- Soil: Requires well-drained, acidic soil (pH 5.5-6.5). It benefits from organic matter incorporation to retain moisture and provide nutrients.
- Watering: Regular watering is essential, especially during establishment and dry periods. However, it does not tolerate waterlogged conditions.
- Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, acid-loving plant fertilizer in early spring and again in late summer to encourage healthy growth and abundant flowering.
- Pruning: Prune after flowering to maintain shape and promote bushiness. It responds well to light trimming but avoid heavy pruning, which can reduce flowering.
- Hardy and generally low maintenance.
